Obituary for David A. Ferris

FERRIS, David A. of Cambridge, died at home on August 18 at the age of 61. Survived by his loving husband of 13 years, Kevin Morrissette. Beloved son of the late Dorothy Ferris of Milton; son and daughter in law Michael and Colleen Ferris and grandchildren John and Katherine Ferris of New York City; daughter Katherine Ferris of London, England; siblings, Diane Pistorino of Taunton; Gail Blout of Cuttyhunk; Robert Ferris and sister in law Mary Burgess of Linthicum, MD; Lisa Ferris of Cambridge. Predeceased siblings, John Ferris of Boxford, Steven Ferris of Plymouth, and Lauren Ferris of Middleboro; nieces and nephews, Dana Ferreira, Meaghan Ferris, Caitlin Ferris, Zachery Ferris, Darya Blout, Jared, Jack, and Seth Kennedy, Joe and Chris Guinazzo, and Eve Raniszewski; sister in law Denise Ferris, and life-long friends Mara Aaronson and Charles Schulle. David was associated with the Rare Books School, which was based at Columbia University and then the University of Virginia from 1985-1993. He was the Associate Director of Rare Books School and also taught course at RBS. David travelled throughout Europe as a Bibliographical Researcher from August 1988 through September 1989. His focus was on researching books printed before 1601 about worship in Renaissance Europe. This position was sponsored by the University of Michigan and the National Endowment for the Humanities. Following his European travels, David returned to the USA and took the position of Curator of Rare Books Early Manuscripts at the Harvard Law School Library. As Curator, David was responsible for the cataloging, preservation and availability of research materials for one of the world’s most comprehensive collections on legal history. The collections are comprised of 3,000 linear feet of manuscripts, over 300,000 rare books. David held this position from 1991 until his retirement in 2011. Visitation from the Keefe Funeral Home, 2175 Mass Ave., NORTH CAMBRIDGE on Thursday from 3-7 pm. A funeral mass will be held on Friday at Saint Paul’s Church, Harvard Sq., Cambridge on Friday at 11 am. Burial is private. Please omit flowers.
